Beliefs

The term Folk Belief or just Beliefs denotes common beliefs about supernatural beings and forces. Such beliefs live alongside and often with no clear boundaries towards religion. On the contrary, there are clear elements of Christianity in Norwegian folk beliefs, and folk religious practice can sometimes be influenced by belief in beings and powers. Beliefs are closely related to social life. They tell us about cultural norms and values, risk and fear, but also about common people’s hopes and dreams. In SAMLA, this category covers stories and statements about supernatural beings, while beliefs in sorcery, witchcraft, protective spells and omens are not included.
