Trolldom – witchcraft or sorcery – denotes acts of magic. There are various forms of witchcraft, from protective magic and blessings to different types of black magic seeking harm. Those who practiced witchcraft were called trollfolk, and there is a rich storytelling tradition about people who had such skills. In early modern times (from the late 16th century to the 18th century), sorcery was also used as a legal term, and all forms of sorcery were prohibited.
