There are many different types of play, and many different games. They often have a large geographical and historical distribution. In the cultural-historical material at SAMLA we find traditional games for both children and adults. Play is difficult to define, but a common distinction is that play is an activity seemingly without an immediate purpose beyond itself. Play is voluntary and rule-governed, and can be performed both alone and with others.
