Stev (a four-line stanza song)

Stev is a four-line stanza, often with lyrical content. A distinction is made between gammelstev, that rhymes on the first and third lines, and nystev, that rhymes on the second and fourth lines. The nyestev often has a more personal character than the gammelstev. Stev can be composed as a comment to an event or a person. In some areas people had their own books where they wrote down stev. Several of these kinds of stev books can be found in SAMLA.

Also, saltiest or slåtterim are included in this genre. Slått is a Norwegian term for an instrumental dance tune, and these rhymes could be written as an aid to remember the tune or used to accompany the dance. Slåttestev have no set form and follow the rhythm of the dance tune.
